Willmar Escapes Upset, Defeats Lakers 5-4 in Extra Innings

By Paul Torres May 28, 2024 | 9:29 PM
The Laker baseball team’s upset bid was spoiled in extra innings by the Willmar Cardinals as they lost 5-4 on a two-out wild pitch. The Lakers had a lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Cardinals scored a two-out RBI single by pinch hitter Jaxin Schirmers to force extra innings.
Noah Rieber pitched great for the Lakers, but his pitch count was over 100 pitches after the sixth inning. DL’s Alex Specht came on in relief in the 7th inning and also pitched well despite giving up the game-winning run on a wild pitch. The Laker offense scored all four of their runs against starting pitcher Jordan Ellingson, who was pulled after the third inning. DL’s offense finished the night with seven hits, all of which were singles. The Lakers scored one run in the second and three runs in the fourth inning. Willmar’s Tyler Madsen came on in relief and shutdown the Laker offense.
The loss drops the Lakers into the loser’s bracket, and they will match up with the loser of the Little Falls and Fergus Falls. That game will be played on the road on Thursday.
