Washington, DC) — As we approach the fourth anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is renewing her push for the Justice in Policing Act. Floyd tragically died after ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for over nine minutes. Omar stated, “What we are fighting for is to undo 400 years of being brutalized, victimized, surveilled, enslaved, imprisoned, and having the life choked out of us in the cities we call home.” The Justice in Policing Act aims to ban chokeholds like the one that killed Floyd and eliminate qualified immunity, which currently protects police officers from prosecution in certain cases. However, Sgt. Rob Pride, chair of the National Fraternal Order of Police, expressed concerns that ending qualified immunity could make it challenging to recruit and retain skilled officers.
