MN Senator Amy Klobuchar met with the White Earth Tribal Council in regards to a proposal that could shift the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge from federal to tribal control. Klobuchar hinted that the transfer is still being discussed, but hasn’t revealed whether or not she’s on board with the plan. White Earth Tribal Chairman Michael Fairbanks has been pushing for the White Earth State Forest and Tamarac Refuge to be returned to tribal jurisdiction. Talks have been ongoing, but details are still under wraps. Fairbanks says he’s all about preserving the land and making it work for everyone and says White Earth’s parks would be open to all, tribal or not. For him, returning the forest to tribal hands isn’t just about land – it’s about healing. The 40,000 acre Tamarac Federal Wildlife Refuge (which includes 28 lakes) in NW Minnesota, was purchased (99.9%) by duck hunters with Federal Duck Stamp money
