The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is showcasing the diverse offerings of Sand Dunes State Forest. An open house is set for April 4th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Big Lake Middle School Student Center. Established in 1945, the forest spans over 11,000 acres, featuring a 36-unit campground and specialized recreation areas. Activities range from horseback riding and fishing in the summer to hunting and snowmobiling in the winter. Matt Wappler, Assistant Regional Forestry Manager, highlights the forest’s unique ecosystems and management practices to maintain recreation, timber, and wildlife habitat. The event will cover prescribed burns and upcoming maintenance plans. Sand Dunes State Forest is located about five miles north of Big Lake in Sherburne County.
