There’s nothing wrong with that (existing) flag,’ said former Becker County Commissioner Roger Winter. ‘We support keeping the old flag.’Becker County gave a big thumbs-down to the new state flag design on Tuesday, Feb. 6, unanimously approving a resolution mirroring one passed by Crow Wing County on Jan. 2. No one at the meeting spoke in favor of the proposed new flag, though a local man — former Lake Park Mayor Aaron Wittnebel — sat on the State Emblems Redesign Commission. The existing state flag and seal “are not only symbols of our state,” the resolution reads, “but also of our history, and both the current official state flag and the official state seal contain historical information on our farming background, Native American heritage and the coexistence that is part of the rich history of our state.”The board unanimously approved the resolution, which received extended applause from onlookers. Crow Wing County voted 3-1-1 in January in favor of sending a letter of opposition to Walz and the Legislature. McLeod County, Houston County and the Minnesota Republican Party have also publicly renounced the new flag and seal designs.
