Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-

The Laker boys hockey team could not put an end to their losing streak on Tuesday night falling to the Alexandria Cardinals 4-2 on their home ice. The Lakers played strong in the losing effort, but as has become all too familiar during their four-game losing streak, their opponent did just enough to win, and the Lakers’ offense fell short.

Alexandria scored the game’s first goal at the 6:37 mark of the first period when Grady Olson scored an unassisted goal. The Lakers cashed in a powerplay with Will Cymbaluk netted the game-tying goal with 4:08 left in the first period. Detroit Lakes took their first lead of the game just 42 seconds after the Cymbaluk goal when Dalton Songstad scored on a one-time feed from Easton Kennedy, catching Cardinal goalie Brady Metcalf out of position in front of the net.

The Cardinals tied the game in the second period, with Leo Kompelien scoring a goal on Laker goalie Kale Witt with 9:12 left in the second period. Witt had one of his best saves of the season during the second period when he made a save from the prone position to keep the Lakers in the hockey game. After the Kompelien goal, both teams were unable to find any more offense in the remaining minutes of the second period.

The Cardinals had a great start to the third period, with Gavin Olson scoring the go-ahead goal at the 1:24 minute mark. Although the Lakers did not lose their spirits after conceding the goal, they were unable to get the puck past Metcalf. Alexandria sealed the game with a late empty net goal from Evan Anderson in the final seconds.

The loss drops the Lakers record to 9-11-1. Alexandria moves a game above .500 with the win and is now 9-8-1 overall.

The Lakers will have a tough road test on Thursday when they travel to St. Cloud to take on Cathedral. St. Cloud Cathedral is 16-4-1 on the season and has one of the best starting lines in class-A hockey, being led in points by John Hirschfeld, Andrew Dwinnell, and Joey Gillespie.
