According to Parents, Monday’s WDC school closures due to racially-motivated threats

A parent of three WDC students, says two boys have been harassing her kids due to their race(VNL Staff)

WADENA, Minn. (Valley News Live) – Earlier this week, another school district shut its doors after receiving a threat. While many of the recent closures have been due to robocalls, one Wadena family says the closure at Wadena-Deer Creek schools on Monday was for a different reason.

Kristy Higgins, a parent of three WDC students, says two boys have been harassing her kids due to their race. Her kids have been called racial slurs and other derogatory names. Higgins says she has reported the harassment to the school district before, but nothing was ultimately done.

The threats escalated over the weekend. A picture was posted to snapchat of some firearms, with the boys saying they were going to shoot Higgin’s daughter, her friends, and then the school. Police were notified of the post, causing the closure on Monday.

. They also would like to see the school be more open about what is actually happening.

“All threats to our school or students are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly,” said WDC Middle/High School Principal Tyler Church. “Unfortunately, this is the stuff we have to deal with in today’s world

“Local law enforcement is handling the situation. We understand that there may be questions, but at this time we are limited as to what information we can disclose due to data privacy laws and the fact that this is still an active investigation.”
