DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The USDA in March extended its effort to provide free meals to children through the summer.
The Detroit Lakes School District is now determining if there is enough interest in the community to continue to provide the meals throughout the summer.
The USDA has issued over a dozen critical waivers since the early months of the pandemic to make free food more accessible to children struggling with food insecurity. Some of the waivers have been extended multiple times with the latest extended until Sept. 30, 2021.
The meals are open to any family with children 18 and under. To gauge interest the Detroit Lakes School District is asking parents and guardians to complete a survey by April 16, 2021.
