Detroit Lakes, Minn. (KDLM) – Griffin Lindberg, a freshman goalie for the Lakers, debuted in the varsity game on Tuesday evening. He played exceptionally well against the East Grand Forks Greenwave, one of the state’s top-ranked teams in Class A boy’s hockey.

Despite Lindberg’s 36 saves, the Lakers suffered a 4-1 loss on their home ice against the Greenwave.

Detroit Lakes struck first, with Hudson Pettit scoring an even-strength goal at the 8:26 mark of the first period; Carter Whitworth picked up the assist. The goal was Pettit’s first goal of his varsity career.

The Lakers played with good pace in the first period and neutralized EGF with a much improved defensive outing compared to the previous game against the Fergus Falls Otters.

The Lakers could only contain the Greenwave’s high-powered attack for so long as Brock Schultz scored the equalizer at the 11:15 mark of the first period.

The Greenwave committed two penalties late in the first period and carried into the second. The Lakers couldn’t take advantage of their five-on-three advantage and were held off the score sheet.

East Grand Forks unknotted the tied game at the 5:15 mark of the second period when Hunter Varnson scored a goal on a deflection in front. Varnson added another tally less than two minutes later when he scored on an even-strength opportunity to increase the Greenwave lead to 3-1. Jace Van Eps had the final goal of the period and the game when he scored on a breakaway, beating Lindberg top shelf.

The third period went quickly with no penalties and no goals scored. Neither side was able to sustain pressure nor take advantage of their opportunities.

The Lakers finished with nine shots on the net in the losing effort but had several missed chances by not hitting the net.

The Lakers’ penalty kill improved as they killed off all four penalties they took during the game. The Lakers enter the game, having given up two powerplay goals against Fergus Falls in their previous outing.

The win improves East Grand Forks record to 3-0. They will travel to Mahtomedi to take on the defending Class A state champions on Friday.

The Lakers will travel to St. Cloud (0-1) on Thursday for their first road game of the new season. St. Cloud lost their first game of the year against Rogers 9-1.
