3 people injured in two-vehicle crash on Highway 10 near Detroit Lakes Becker County Airport Saturday night

Detroit Lakes, Minn. (KDLM) – Three people were injured in two-vehicle crash on Highway 10, near Airport Road, in Detroit Lakes on Saturday night.

On Nov. 25 at 8:18 p.m., a 2008 GMC Yukon, driven by 43-year-old Andrew Jon Skersick of Detroit Lakes, was attempting to turn onto westbound Highway 10 when it collided with an eastbound 2010 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 59-year-old Jeff Paul Hanna of Fargo.

Airbags deployed in both vehicles during the crash.

Hanna, and his passenger, 40-year-old Cassie Lyn Kostka of Perham, both suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the incident and were transported to Essentia Health St. Mary’s in Detroit Lakes for treatment.

Skersick also suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the crash and was also transported to the hospital.

All three vehicle occupants were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash and law enforcement has not been able to make a determination whether alcohol played any role in the incident.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported road conditions as “dry” at the time of the crash.

Fargo man arrested following pursuit and crash on Interstate 29 Friday morning

A police pursuit and rollover crash injured three people early Friday morning in Fargo. The driver was arrested and is expected to be charged with multiple felonies.

On Nov. 24, shortly after 4 a.m., police spotted an SUV driving recklessly in the 3300 block of 13th Avenue S.

As the SUV entered Interstate 29, an officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the SUV fled northbound on the interstate.

A short time later, dispatchers received multiple 911 calls of a rollover crash at 12th Avenue North and I-29.

Officers arriving on the scene found the SUV had left the road and rolled in the ditch.

A witness to the crash told police the driver fled the vehicle and was running north.

The driver of the SUV, 31-year-old Bobby James of Fargo, was taken into custody nearby.

James, and two female passengers who were inside the SUV at the time of the crash, were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

According to a preliminary crash report, law enforcement believes the SUV struck a concrete median while traveling northbound near the 12th Avenue North exit ramp. The vehicle then struck the curb on the westbound lanes of the avenue, went airborne, and then descended down a steep embankment into the ditch, before rolling over.

James was arrested for felony fleeing a police officer in a vehicle, two counts of felony reckless endangerment, refusal to haul, driving under suspension, and other outstanding warrants.

Cantaloupe recall expanded; affects ALDI products, among others

U.S. health officials have recalled three more brands of cantaloupes as the number of people sickened by salmonella more than doubled this week, including two people in Minnesota who have died.

Nearly 100 people in 32 states have gotten sick from the contaminated fruits and 45 of them are hospitalized. Arizona, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ohio have the highest number of cases.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s original recall included Malichita brand whole cantaloupe, Vinyard brand pre-cut cantaloupe and ALDI whole cantaloupe and pre-cut fruit products.

Additionally, Rudy brand whole cantaloupes and Freshness Guaranteed brand and RaceTrac brand pre-cut cantaloupes joined the list Friday.

Two weeks ago, Hornbacher’s stores in the Fargo-Moorhead area recalled Malichita brand cantaloupe.

Health officials say anyone who bought the recalled fruits should throw them away and wash surfaces that touched them with hot, soapy water or in a dishwasher.

Most people infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps within six hour to six days after consuming food contaminated with the bacteria.

Illnesses typically last four to seven days. Vulnerable people, including children, people older than 65 and those with weakened immune systems may develop severe illnesses that require medical care or hospitalization.

2 people killed in separate North Dakota crashes on Saturday

Two people were killed in separate crashes in North Dakota on Saturday

On Nov. 25, a 59 year old woman from Dickinson, N.D., was killed when the pickup she was a passenger in rolled on Interstate 94 Saturday night.

The North Dakota Patrol says the 59-year old driver lost control on the ice/snow covered road and entered the roadside ditch.

The victim was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and two other passengers…ages 29 and seven…were transported to the hospital in Dickinson with unknown injuries.

Also on Saturday, at about 12:15 p.m., a crash between a Jeep and a semi-tractor trailer occurred in Alice, N.D., on Highway 38. The crash claimed the life of a 71 year old man from Lisbon, N.D.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol said the victim crossed over the centerline into the opposite lane of travel striking the semi head-on.

The semi driver reported no injuries at the scene.

Chauvin’s lawyer, family struggle to get information following stabbing in Arizona

An attorney for Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd, said Saturday that Chauvin’s family has been kept in the dark by federal prison officials after he was stabbed in prison on Friday.

The lawyer, Gregory M. Erickson, slammed the lack of transparency by the Federal Bureau of Prisons on Saturday, a day after his client was stabbed by another inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona.

According to the Associated Press, a person familiar with the situation says Chauvin was seriously injured in the stabbing.

The person reportedly spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the attack.

On Saturday, Brian Evans, a spokesperson for the Minnesota attorney general’s office, said, quote: “We have heard that he is expected to survive.”

Erickson said Chauvin’s family and his attorneys have hit a wall trying to obtain information about the attack from Bureau of Prisons officials. He said Chauvin’s family has been forced to assume he is in stable condition, based only on news accounts, and has been contacting the prison repeatedly seeking updates but have been provided with no information.

Erickson’s comments highlight concerns raised for years that federal prison officials provide little to no information to the loved ones of incarcerated people who are seriously injured or ill in federal custody.

The AP previously reported the Bureau of Prisons ignored its internal guidelines and failed to notify the families of inmates who were seriously ill with COVID-19 as the virus raged through federal prisons across the U.S.

The issue around family notification has also prompted federal legislation introduced last year in the U.S. Senate that would require the Justice Department to establish guidelines for the Federal Bureau of Prisons and state correctional systems to notify the families of incarcerated people if their loved one has a serious illness, a life-threatening injury or if they die behind bars.

The Bureau of Prisons has only confirmed an assault at the Arizona facility and said employees performed “life-saving measures” before the inmate was taken to a hospital for further treatment and evaluation. The Bureau of Prisons did not name the victim or provide a medical status “for privacy and safety reasons.”
