FARGO (KFGO) – A new underpass set for construction on 11th Street in Moorhead next year and city firefighters said the project will improve their response time.
The underpass will run under two busy railroad tracks that can hold up firefighters when they are dispatched to an emergency.
Moorhead Fire Chief Jeff Wallin said the underpass will be go north and south on 11th St. from where Hornbacher’s is on the south side to about where the fire station is on the north side.
Wallin said: “One of the problems we’ve had at the fire department is long delays when we’ve got trains crossing the tracks to get to the south side of town from our station one and so this underpass project is really going to eliminate those delays when somebody is suffering a life threatening emergency or fire.”
The fire dept. will also have to make significant changes to its station doors, which will be moved from the south side of the building to the northside.
Wallin also said the 3-year project is going to cause some delays when firefighters are dispatched during the construction period due to the detours and realigning their station doors,
The underpass redesign is projected to cost over $100 million and construction on the underpass is scheduled to begin next year.
