Sailboat Regatta Planned to Reveal 150 Sailboat Sculptures in Detroit Lakes

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – A Sailboat Regatta is planned to debut 150 sailboat sculptures in celebration of Detroit Lakes’ 150th Anniversary.

Businesses have partnered with the City of Detroit Lakes to display the sailboat sculptures that were designed by local artist, Hans Gilsdorf and decorated by local artists throughout the city in a community wide art project.

Carrie Johnston, President of the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce says the Sailboat Regatta will be an incredible display of artistry, “the artists who created each sailboat are all individual and they’re going to be from mosaic glass, to painting to vinyl wrap – they’ll be decorated in amazing ways and all in one spot one time ever.”

The sailboats will be on display at the Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes on April 30 before they’re launched into the community. The City of Detroit Lakes will also host a variety of events throughout the summer months to celebrate the city’s 150th anniversary.
