Post 15 Drops First Game of Water Carnival Tournament

Detroit Lakes Post 15 opened up the annual Wood Bat Water Carnival tournament with a 5-3 loss to the Hillsboro Blue Sox at Washington Ballpark last night. Post 15 found themselves in an early 4-0 hole after committing four errors in the first three innings. They got within a run after plating three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit. Post 15 will play three games today as the Wood Bat tournament continues: They’ll play  West St. Paul this morning at 11:00,  Brainerd at 5:30 and West Fargo at 8:00. Other teams in town for the tournament include Anoka, Minot, Duluth, and Jamestown.

Former Laker Maddie Herzog Hired As Women’s Golf Coach At Concordia

Former North Dakota State golfer Maddie Herzog has been hired as the new head coach for the Cobber women’s golf program, the school announced yesterday.

Herzog, who played for the Bison for five seasons, becomes the seventh head coach in the storied history of the women’s golf team, which has won 11 MIAC championships – the most of any school in the conference.

Herzog was a Women’s Golf Coaches Association of America (WGCA) All-American Scholar in 2022 and was named to the Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence that same season. Herzog finished her career as a 3-time Summit League Academic Honor Roll award winner.

Herzog excelled as a high school student-athlete at Detroit Lakes where she finished in the Top 10 at the Minnesota State High School Tournament in both her junior and senior seasons and was a finalist for Ms. Minnesota golf as a senior. During her senior season, she was captain of the team and won eight tournaments during the year. Herzog was also a member of the Lakers squads that won three state championships.

Herzog will begin her position as head coach next month.

Douglas, Biles, Lee To Compete At Olympic Gymnastic Trials in Minnesota

When Target Center hosts the U.S. Gymnastics Olympic Trials next summer, it will feature the last three all-around Olympic gold medalists.

Gabby Douglas, 2012 gold medalist, announced on her Instagram on Wednesday that she intends to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Simone Biles, the 2016 Gold medalist, and Minnesota-native Suni Lee, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics held in 2021, already announced their plans to compete in the upcoming trials.

The U.S. Gymnastics Olympics Trials are set for June 27-30, 2024, at Target Center.

Twins Begin Second Half of MLB Season Tonight In Oakland

The Twins return to action tonight following last week’s All-Star Break. The Twins are in second place in the AL Central with a 45-46 record, half a game behind the Cleveland Guardians. The Twins open the second half of the season on a west coast road trip beginning tonight in Oakland that will also feature a four-game series in Seattle. Kenta Maeda will start for the Twins. First pitch is at 8:40 tonight.
