Detroit Lakes, Minn. (KDLM) – This weekend is Take A Kid Fishing weekend in Minnesota, which runs from June 9-11 throughout the state.
Adults do not need fishing licenses to fish this weekend if they take a child, 15 years old or younger, to accompany them.
According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website, shore fishing off a public pier can lead to some significant catches, especially earlier in the fishing season.
The Minnesota DNR also said fish tend to stay in the same area, so moving along the shoreline to find the right spot could increase any angler’s chances of hauling in a large fish.
The agency also said fishing in the summer from shore can be difficult as thick vegetation makes angling tricky and the fish move to deeper, cooler waters further from the shore. They suggest fishing in the early-morning or evening hours when temperatures are more manageable and fishing from rivers since the water is usually cooler and contains less vegetation.
