Detroit Lakes, Minn. (KDLM) – Today is the United Way Day of Caring across Becker County and hundreds of area high schoolers will be doing service projects to lend a hand.
Terry Haus, executive director of United Way of Becker County, said the work is going to be done across 133 sites near Detroit Lakes and much of service helps someone who needed it.
He also said much of the work will be yard related, but it will vary from property to property.
“It might include some raking, it might include some raking and taking care of some flower beds, maybe do some windows,” said Haus. “It depends on how big the yard is, and that will determine how long it takes them.”
He said most of the student groups will work at two sites over the afternoon and sometimes the owners of the properties will come out and help, or bring them something to drink while they help them.
“A lot of the elderly just can’t do that much work and maybe others don’t have anyone to be able to help them out, so these kids are really providing a huge service to 133 families just here in the Detroit Lakes area,” he said.
Haus also said the coordination of setting up 133 different volunteer sites is a monumental undertaking and it wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated volunteers of the United Way of Becker County.
