Detroit Lakes, Minn. (KDLM) – Detroit Lakes Public Utilites has begun flushing its city fire hydrants on May 1 with the department expecting to wrap up operations by May 12, according to a public utilities Facebook post.

The flushing prevents iron and other minerals to build up in the city’s water mains and ensures an adequate flow is available to all Detroit Lakes businesses and residences.

The procedure also improves water quality and checks a necessary component is available to fire fighters during an emergency.

The news release also states some residents may notice reduced water pressure and flow, but this is considered a normal part of flushing operations.
