Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Laker boys basketball team saw their four-game winning streak snapped, falling to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 72-68 on Thursday night. The Lakers also lost for the first time on their homecourt and are now 5-1 at Lakeshirts Fieldhouse.
The Rebels were led by senior Owen Leach, who had 30 points in the victory. Leach, who has committed to playing men’s basketball at Minnesota Duluth next season and is a candidate for the annual Mr. Minnesota Basketball award, scored points from all over the floor and proved to be a tough matchup for the Lakers defense.
In the first half, the Laker offense got out to a fast start thanks to good 3-point shooting from Mason Carrier. Carrier led the Lakers in scoring in the first half with 12 points and finished the game with a team-high 25 points. Despite the strong start for the Lakers from beyond the arc, they found themselves in a scoring drought halfway through the first half.
The Rebels took their first lead of the game when Makhi Leedahl converted on a three-pointer to give the Rebels the lead at 21-19 with 8:25 to go in the first half. A lead that the Rebels never gave up after that moment. The Rebels led at halftime 38-32.
Detroit Lakes found their scoring touch in the second half and hung with the Rebels throughout. Detroit Lakes cut the deficit to 65-63 with 40 seconds left to go, and the Lakers committed a foul when Mason Carrier went for a block against Leach. Leach made both free throws to give the Rebels a four-point lead.
Detroit Lakes had a chance to cut into that deficit when Oliver Quam was fouled and was sent to the line. The Lakers missed both free throws. Detroit Lakes struggled at the free throw line shooting just 33% on 2-6 free throws. The Rebels shot 77% at the line and made 24 of 31 free throw attempts.
The loss drops DL’s record to 8-5 overall. The Rebels improved to 9-2 overall and have now won seven straight games.
Detroit Lakes will return to action on Tuesday night against section favorite Alexandria. KDLM will have that game for you with pregame coverage beginning at 7:15 pm.
