DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The Laker boys basketball team remained undefeated at home as they picked up their fifth win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Willmar Cardinals 80-75. The Lakers move to 3-0 at the Lakeshirts Fieldhouse and 5-4 overall. The win also helps playoff seedings for the end of the season, as both the Cardinals and the Lakers belong to Section 8AAA.
The lead exchanged hands throughout the first half, but Detroit Lakes had a three-point lead at the break, 40-37. Mason Carrier led the way in the first half for the Lakers, as he had 17 points at the break. Detroit Lakes was stellar from beyond the arc, with Devon Berg scoring three 3-pointers in the first half. Ethan Carrier finished the first half with 8 points.
The Cardinals came out strong in the second half and built a 12-point lead with 8:36 left in the game. Detroit Lakes called a timeout and picked up two three-pointers out of the timeout from Ethan Carrier and Devon Berg to make the score 64-68 with 7:30 left. Detroit Lakes took the lead later after a Willmar timeout. Detroit Lakes went on to take the lead, with Mason Carrier, Brandton Marsh, and Ethan Carrier contributing down the stretch. The Lakers were able to come up with some big defensive stops, and the Lakers shut down Willmar’s 6’6 senior Blake Schoolmeester with good defense by Marsh.
Detroit Lakes finished the game shooting 26-47 (55%) from the field and 14-24 (58%) from beyond the arc. Mason Carrier led the Lakers in scoring, finishing the game with 35 points. Brandton Marsh finished in the lead in the rebound category with 11 boards. Devon Berg led the way in assists with 9.
The Lakers are now 3-1 in section games and will return to action on Tuesday night when they host the Fergus Falls Otters (4-4). Laker boys basketball can be heard on Tuesday night, with KDLM’s pregame coverage beginning at 7:15 pm.
