FERGUS FALLS (KDLM) – The Laker girls basketball team improved their winning streak to five games with a 60-50 win over the Fergus Falls Otters on Wednesday night at the Holiday Classic in Fergus Falls.
The Lakers, who were swept by the Otters during the regular season last year, jumped out to a 7-0 lead to begin the game. The Otters bounced back after a slow start and took their first lead at 21-20 with 2:26 remaining in the first half. The Otters went to halftime up 26-23. Their leading scorer was sophomore Brynn Sternberg, who finished the half with seven points.
The Lakers played strong defense to begin the second half and retook the lead with 14:39 left, leading 33-31. The Lakers never trailed after that point and jumped to a 15-point lead in the second half. The Otters committed 26 turnovers in the game. The Lakers were led in scoring by Grace Gunderson, who finished the game with 14 points. Senior Jacee Hauser overcame a slow start in the first half and scored nine points. Hauser played tough defense and held the Otters Cyntreya Lockett to only 13 points.
The win improved the Lakers record to 5-1 overall, and they will look to win the tournament on Thursday afternoon when they take on the Crookston Pirates, who defeated the number 1 ranked team in Class A, the Hancock Owls, 56-55 on Wednesday. Tipoff on Thursday will be at 2 pm.
