DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The Laker girls basketball team opened up their season at home on Tuesday night, falling to the Perham Yellowjackets 50-34. The Yellowjackets took the lead with 2:19 left in the first half, 19-18, and never gave up that lead again. The Yellowjackets added another win to their record as they moved to 2-0.
The Lakers were looking forward to their first game after advancing to the state tournament last season. The Lakers return all of their starters from last year’s team.
Detroit Lakes showed some rust offensively and could not overcome a 12 point deficit with five minutes to go in the game. The Lakers were led offensively by Abby Larson, who finished with nine points. Larson had to sit out midway through the first half after sustaining an injury during a scramble on defense. Larson fell hard to the court, but she was able to return to the game and provided a spark on a steal and score. DL’s Grace Gunderson finished second on the team with points 8, and Elle Betcher played strong defensively and finished with four points. Jacee Hauser fouled out of the game in the second half finishing with three points. The Lakers also had good play from Ellie Lundie off the bench, as she finished with seven points.
Perham was led by Willow Thiel, who finished with 14 points in the winning effort. The Yellowjackets played most of their roster and picked up 15 points from their bench.
Detroit Lakes is now 0-1 and will look to earn their first win of the season on Friday night as they travel to Little Falls to take on the Flyers. DL and Little Falls are in the same section, meaning tonight’s game will significantly impact section seeds. Detroit Lakes has six games against section opponents this season. The Flyers enter play on Friday at 0-1. Little Falls lost their season opener on Tuesday night against Rocori 53-36.
