Lakers Avenge Last Years Season Opening Loss With Blowout Of Fergus Falls

Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – One year after losing a mistake-filled, penalty-riddled 29-15 loss to Fergus Falls to start the 2021 season, the Lakers were nearly perfect in a 54-10 blowout win over the rival Otters to start the 2022 season.

The Fergus Falls offense looked poised to pick up where they left off with a 44-yard passing play on their opening drive, but the offense stalled in the red zone after a missed field goal attempt.

Ethan Carrier set the tone for the Laker offense early with a 79-yard touchdown run on the first offensive play of the season…the first of four touchdowns for Carrier. Carrier would score again in the first quarter on a 24-yard run to make it 14-0 Lakers midway through the first quarter. Breck Winter returned a Otter quarterback Brayden Nelson interception to the four-yard line, setting up a Mason Carrier touchdown to give the Lakers a 21-0 lead after the first quarter.

Mason would throw his first varsity-level touchdown pass in the second quarter, finding Jake Pavek for a ten-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter. After Fergus Falls got on the board with a 30-yard field goal from Jaydon Manteufel, Ethan Carrier returned the ensuing kickoff 82-yards for another Laker score. Mason was 4-4 passing for 42 yards and a touchdown.

The Lakers got the ball back again late in the second quarter after a Charlie Kalina interception. Quarterback Mason Carrier led a two-minute drive down the field, capped off by a touchdown by Ethan Carrier with one second left in the half to take a 41-3 lead. Carrier finished the game with 124 yards on seven carriers to go along with three rushing touchdowns and a kick return touchdown.

The Lakers sat their starters in the second half, which opened the door for Easton Wahl and Tommy Suckert to score their first varsity touchdowns in the 54-10 win.

The Lakers improve to 1-0 on the season and will travel to East Grand Forks next Friday to face the Green Wave at 7:00.
