Lakes Area Woman Scammed out of Nearly $100,000

PONSFORD (KDLM) – An elderly woman near Ponsford has been scammed out of nearly $100,000.

The woman, who was the victim of an email scam was told by the scammer she needed to pay $500 for computer assistance as well as fill out a form that included her banking information.

Once the scammers received her banking information, $99,000 was transferred out of her bank account to separate accounts in Puerto Rico and Hong Kong.

The American Journal of Public Health estimates that about 5 percent of the elderly population (which equates to around two to three million people) suffer from some sort of scam every year. Most of the time, the money that is lost in the scam cannot be recovered.
