Laker Girls XC Takes Fourth In Season Opener; Boys Finish Seventh

STAPLES, MN (KDLM) – The Laker Cross Country teams opened up the 2022 season at the Central Minnesota River Run in Staples on Monday, with the girls finishing fourth and the boys seventh.

Senior Julia Steffl paced the girls’ team with a fifth-place finish overall and a time of 21:17.3. Senior Maria Foltz finished 21st overall with a 23:51.4. Sophomore Karlie Skarie was 25th (24.03.0), seventh-grader Marin Johnson was 29th (24:27.9). Senior Kira Wolfe (25:01.3) and freshman Natalie Mohr (25:01.6) finished within a second of each other for 36th and 37th place. Senior Lily Baethke (25:20.5) finished 43rd in the 83-runner field. Staples-Motley, the defending Class A State Champions, won the meet with a team score of 32. Junior Kiana Burton won the meet with a time of 19:33.0.

The Laker Boys finished seventh out of eleven teams to start the year. Junior Braydon Francis was the first Laker in with a 29th place finish and a time of 20:02.06, followed closely by junior Micah Barberg with a 20:05.2 and a 31st place finish. Senior Hunter Hanson (21:01.7) finished 43rd overall, and senior Mark Carlson (21:04.5), sophomore Hunter Olson (21:04.6), and senior Xander Jessen (21:04.9) finished in a clump for 45th, 46th, and 47th place, respectively. Freshman Peyton Malecka (21:53.5) was the 57th runner in the 86-runner field. Bertha-Hewitt freshman Brady Rach won the race with a time of 17:16.0 with Park Rapids winning the meet as a team after placing five runners in the top eight.

The Lakers are off until Thursday, September 8th when they host a nine-team meet at the Lakeview Golf Course at 4:30.
