DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – Pets across the country will be making trips to their owners’ workplaces on Friday to celebrate Take Your Pet to Work Day.

For Kristi Ostlund with Hospice of the Red River Valley, every day is take your pet to work day. Ostlund helps coordinate pet therapy sessions for Hospice. Pet therapy, also known as animal-assisted therapy, in the hospice setting uses the natural bond between humans and animals to provide comfort, peace, and soothing companionship to terminally ill patients.

Hospice has a number of dogs which are licensed as pet therapy animals in Detroit Lakes and Hospice’s service area. Ostlund says when a dog arrives it brings a big smile, “A giant smile breaks out across their face, they perk up – even if they haven’t had much engagement before we’re sure to get some.”

Studies show petting dogs and cats can reduce blood pressure and anxiety. This simple act prompts the release of “feel good” hormones in humans, including serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin.

Volunteers and their dogs are always needed. Ostlund says a training program, including licensure is required. If you would like to learn more about the Hospice Pet Therapy Program you can visit https://www.hrrv.org/
