Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Detroit Lakes junior Mason Carrier became the first member of Gopher football coach PJ Fleck’s recruiting Class of 2024 on Sunday afternoon, announcing that he will play for the Gophers.
“There are moments in everyone’s life that they will never forget,” Carrier wrote on Twitter. “After talking to Coach Fleck on the phone on Sunday morning, I have decided to row my academic and athletic career at The University of Minnesota.
Carrier, a 6’2″, 200 lb junior linebacker, is currently ranked as the third-best in-state recruit in the Class of 2024 according to 247 Sports and is currently ranked the 32nd-best high school linebacker in the country.
Carrier and his older brother Ethan, who also announced his commitment to the University of Minnesota today, were both offered spots on the Gophers once their high school careers are over exactly two weeks ago. Ethan was offered a preferred walk-on spot, and Mason was offered a full-ride scholarship.
“I was speechless,” Mason told KDLM. “The U of M has always been my dream, and I’d take this college over any college in the US. My family has always been really big Gopher fans. I’m really excited to play for Coach Fleck. He’s very straightforward, he says what he thinks and he’s a real motivator. I can’t wait to get started.”
