VERGAS (KDLM) – The North Stars Water Ski Show Team is celebrating the 100th year of water skiing this weekend in Vergas.
Water skiing was invented in the United States in 1922 when Minnesotan Ralph Samuelson built the first pair of skis and was towed on them behind an outboard-powered boat. What Samuelson originated became an exhibition sport on both sides of the Atlantic in the 1920s and early 1930s and continues 100 years later.
“This has historically been a really big place for water skiing and we’re trying to bring it back and bring the popularity back with the younger kids,” said Betsy Gillman with the North Stars Water Ski Show. “We want people to come out to Vergas and watch us barefoot, swivel ski, do pyramids and we want kids to get involved.”
The North Stars Water Ski Show Team is comprised primarily of members from the Lakes Area who practice and perform throughout the summer months.
You can see their performance this Saturday at the Vergas City Beach on Long Lake from 4-5 p.m.
