DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The Detroit Lakes Track and Field teams will host the Section 8AA prelims at Mollberg Field Wednesday afternoon with very high expectations.

“We’re a really well-rounded team,” said girls coach Maggy Doll. “It’s not just the sprinting side of things…we have great sprinters that are juniors and freshman…we have really good throwers…distance is coming along…hurdles are strong. We have kids all over the place,”

One of the big changes to the MSHSL this year was the addition of a third class in a number of sports, including Track and Field, which makes the competition a little different this year than in years past.

“Things are a little different for sections this year,” said Doll. “They expanded to three classes, and we stayed in AA. So bigger schools like Moorhead, Brainerd, Bemidji, and Sartell all moved up to AAA. However, there is still a lot of good competition in AA with schools like Fergus Falls, Alexandria, Willmar, and Rocori.”

The Section 8AAA Prelim Meet will begin at Mollberg Field at 3:00 Wednesday afternoon. The Finals will be held in Alexandria on Saturday with the top-two finishers in each event will advancing to the State Track and Field Meet on June 9-11 at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

“We have a lot of kids that have a chance to go to State this year. Our goal is lofty, but we want to take a bus to State…not a van or two. Abby Larson is ranked first and second in the section in the 100m and 200m, Rylee Johnson is third in the 100m hurdles, Annie Paulson is ranked second in the 300m hurdles, Jacee Hauser is ranked first in the shot put and fifth in the discus, Jerzie Horner and Jordan Ehnert both have a great chance to get to state in the pole vault…they’re ranked second and fourth, Lily Anderson is jumping 33’s and is ranked fifth right now. And then you’ve got our relays: our 4×100 could go, they’re ranked third. Our 4×200 is ranked first right now, and we’re hoping to podium our 4×400 and 4×800. Ideally, we will send a lot to the Finals in Alexandria on Saturday and then hope we fill a bus and head to State.”
