DETRIOT LAKES (KDLM) – Detroit Lake officially became ice-free on Friday, May 6.
Ice-off has only occurred in May five times on the lake in the last 30 years, most recently May 12, 2013. This year’s ice-off is nearly two weeks later than the average for the lake with the lake being ice-covered for 161 days.
Detroit Lake’s water level is high as well pushing the lake to its highest water level since late June of 2014. The last time water levels were this high at ice-out was in 1996.
