Spring Rains May Help Replenish Lakes Area Lakes

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – An abundance of rain recently may help with low water levels on some Lakes Area lakes.

“We’ve been whittling away at the drought and we’ve continued that wet pattern. We don’t know what’s going yet with all the lakes because a lot of them still have ice on north of the Twin Cities. But around the Twin Cities the ones that have lost their ice there’s has been a bit of a bump, about a half foot from last fall,” said Assistant State Climatologist Pete Boulay.

Boulay says it’s a good sign that lake levels aren’t going down, but we’re not completely out of the woods yet. Farmers are welcoming the rains and hoping soil temperatures warm up soon.

Last summer, water levels on area lakes dropped significantly due to an extended drought. Boaters experienced significant issues with launching and retrieving boats. DNR crews had to repair and extend many boat launch ramps.
