Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The late Ray Heino has been honored by the Minnesota Interscholastic Activities Administrators Association with their Distinguished Service Award. His wife, Lou Heino, accepted the award on his behalf earlier this week.

Ray, who passed away in August 2021, was recognized for over 60 years of service to Detroit Lakes Lakers Hockey. He served as head coach, assistant coach, and was an official for both high school and collegiate hockey over a 20-year span beginning in 1957. He then took over as the official score clock operator for Laker hockey for more than 40 years.

Heino was also instrumental in the installation of artificial ice at the Kent Freeman Arena in 1971.  This was accomplished through the efforts of many volunteers.  Ray was the liaison between the local group and the Canadian Ice Machine Company who supplied the necessary equipment.
