HAWLEY (KDLM) – A Ukrainian foreign exchange student living in Hawley whose hometown in Ukraine has been bombarded by the Russian invasion is asking community members in the Lakes Area to help.
Daniella Zubarieva is making and selling t-shirts, bracelets, soaps and candles and sending the proceeds to her hometown, Mariupol in south eastern Ukraine.
“I live in one of the cities that’s being attacked right now, Mariupol. Our city has been over fire for more than five days, I haven’t talked to my mom in four days. It’s really hard to get a hold of everyone because Russian invaders are trying to occupy more and more land,” said Zubarieva in an interview with KVRR-TV.
Zubarieva says her city has been under attack since February 24 leaving people without power and dwindling food supplies. The city is one of the most desperate in Ukraine with an estimated 200,000 people hoping to flee.
So far, Zubarieva has raised $1,500. Donations can be made on Facebook.
