‘Lift Up Bobby’: Detroit Lakes High School Students Raising Money for Staff Member in Need

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – Detroit Lakes High School students and staff are coming together to help one of their own.

Mary Kvebak, an English teacher at the High School recently noticed that Bobby Heimark, an IT Tech with the District had left his scooter in a snowbank in the school parking lot. Heimark who has worked with the District for over twenty years suffers from a rare condition called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) which makes it extremely difficult to walk. After inquiring, Heimark indicated he didn’t have a lift for his car and often left the scooter in the school parking lot, he would then pick up his wife and bring her back to the High School where she would then lift the scooter into the car.

Kvebak’s students have come together and created “Lift up Bobby”, a campaign to help raise money to purchase Heimark a lift for his vehicle. “Not only are we lifting him up physically (with the lift), but we are lifting him up by supporting him,” said Kvebak.

So far students have passed around buckets for money at the boys basketball game last week and made $935 as well as created an online fundraiser. The students have raised $2500 of the $5000 goal. Funds will be used for the purchase of a lift and the extra money will go towards medical expenses.
