Perham’s Ramos wins 182AA State Wrestling Title

ST PAUL, MN (KDLM/KPRW) – Perham senior Brian Ramos won the State Individual Wrestling title for the 182 weight class in Class AA at the State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, defeating junior Joey Novak of New Prague in overtime 8-6.

Ramos finishes his senior season with a 49-1 record.

 

PERHAM (CLASS AA)

Ramos was one of four Perham wrestlers competing in the individual tournament this weekend. Sophomore Chandler Mickelson (120) was pinned by Asher Hedblom of Rock Ridge in his opening match, senior Blake Lorentz (182)lost to senior Mason Doucette of Becker and senior Carson Kullhem of Aitkin in the wrestle-backs, and sophomore Hudson Hackle (195) was pinned by senior Evan Anderson of New Prague.

DETROIT LAKES (CLASS AA)

Junior Cade Jackson finished sixth in the 160AA weight class. Jackson defeated junior Connor Gmahl in the opening round, then lost to eventual state champion Jude Link of Litchfield-Dassel-Cokato in the second round. Jackson would win his next three wrestle-back matches before losing his final two matches of the meet. He was defeated by senior Jonathan Harvey of Lake City in the fifth-place matchup.

Senior Bradly Swiers (138) went 2-2 during the State Wrestling, pinning freshman Brycen Morley of Chicago Lakes in the opening round. Swiers was pinned by eventual 138 State Champion Koy Buesgens of New Prague, then pinned Brandon Reyes of South Minneapolis. He lost a 5-2 decision to Ethan Ballweber to end his tournament.

Junior Tyson Ullyot went 1-2 in the tournament, winning his opening-round matchup against sophomore Kenny Erickson of Aitkin. Ullyot would get pinned by junior Kaiden Schrandt of Simley then lose to junior Caden Rose of Mahaca in the wrestle-backs.

Junior Jeff Moen (285) lost his only match of the tournament, losing by pinfall to senior Aaron Adekplovi of St. Paul Como Park.

UNITED CLAY BECKER (CLASS AA)

Junior Taylor Johnson (126) went 0-2 in the tournament, falling to state runner-up sophomore Tyson Charmoli of St. Francis in the opening round and Zach Tracy of Scott-West in the wrestle-backs.

FRAZEE

Freshman Cade Nagel (113) went 0-1 in the tournament, falling to junior Simon Kruze of St. Clair/Mankato-Loyola.

Freshman Bailey Peichel (132) went 0-2, losing by pinfall to state champion senior Walker Bents of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the opening round, and pinfall to freshman Hunter Gruchow of West Central Area in the wrestle-backs.

Junior Jake Nagel (152) lost his opening round matchup against senior Konner Harpestad of Maple River/USC, and didn’t qualify for wrestle-backs.

Junior Daniel Graham (170) went 0-2, losing to state champion junior Anthony Skykora of West Central Area and senior Caden Johnson of Tracy-Milroy.

NEW YORK MILLS (CLASS A)

Junior Simon Snyder (145) lost his only match of the tournament, an 8-4 decision to junior John Paul Fitzpatrick of Crosby-Ironton. Senior Dane Niemi (152) lost his lone match of the meet 8-7 to senior Jacob Blair of Minnewaska Area. Senior Ben Salo (182) also went 0-1 in the tournament as he was defeated by pinfall by senior Vander Mathiowetz of Red Rock. Senior Sawyer Weddle (285) was pinned his lone match by senior Jackson Esping of Minnesota.
