Lakes Area Residents Asked to Check Home’s Water Temperature to Avoid Frozen Pipes

Mar 3, 2022 | 11:10 AM

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – Detroit Lakes Public Utilities (DLPU) is asking residents to check their home’s current water temperature.

DLPU says the frost depth in the Lakes Area has increased over the last several days which could lead to frozen water pipes.

Residents are encouraged to place a thermometer into a glass and run cold water into the glass for about 20 minutes. If the temperature of the water is below 38 degrees you should continue to let your water run about a pencil stream until it warms up.

Property owners are responsible for protecting both water pipes and the water meter from damage. When below freezing temperatures are sustained over a few days, water pipes and meters that are close to cold air may freeze. To help prevent frozen pipes you should make frequent use of your water supply, eliminate cold drafts near water pipes and provide warmth to the water pipes by allowing warm air to circulate.
