Snow, Wind and Ice Impact Lakes Area

Dec 16, 2021 | 6:27 AM

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – Roadways throughout the Lakes Area have become snow and ice covered making travel difficult, Thursday morning.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 10 a.m., Thursday. Detroit Lakes received about 3 inches of snow overnight and areas of blowing snow are significantly reducing visibility.

The National Weather Service says a low pressure system will exit into Ontario this morning and the snow in northwestern and west central Minnesota will come to an end prior to noon. For the rest of the day the region can expect cold and windy conditions, though wind gusts not as strong as last night. Still strong enough for pockets of blowing snow this morning.

Wind chills thru the day will drop to below zero and afternoon temperatures will be in the single digits to low teens.

A number of schools in the area are delayed by at least 2 hours, with some choosing to close and opting instead for a virtual e-learning day. A full list of delays and closings is available HERE.
