DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – Lakes Area residents will join the nation, Thursday, Nov. 11 to honor all military veterans during Veterans Day.
The holiday, observed annually on November 11, originally known as Armistice Day honors those who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
A number of events will take place in the Lakes Area to honor Veterans:
The Women’s Relief Corps and the Detroit Lakes/Becker County/White Earth Wreaths Across America teams have provided window signs to local businesses to help honor Vets.
A Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at Veterans Memorial Park in Detroit Lakes, beginning at 11am, Thursday.
“Everybody should come to the Memorial Park for that special day, remember those who have literally put their lives on the line and been willing to defend our freedoms,” said Gary Rehborg with the Detroit Lakes VFW.
Originally, the holiday marked the anniversary of the 1918 signing of the Armistice. This event marked the end of fighting on the Western Front in the First World War. The signing took place at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
