WAUBUN (KDLM) – Volunteers kept a POW flag in motion for 24 hours straight during the 3rd Annual POW/MIA Memorial Walk, Friday, Sept. 17 in Waubun.
The event which started in 2019 by former Air Force Veterans Nate and Jodi Flugel of Detroit Lakes was something they had seen done at Air Force bases they had been stationed at.
The Flugels, members of the Ogema VFW, recruit volunteers in 15 minute shifts to keep the flag in motion around the Waubun High School track for 24 hours straight each year on the third weekend in September during National POW/MIA Recognition Day.
“We like to keep the flag moving for 24 hours in remembrance of those missing in action – these gentleman that sacrificed so much for our freedoms, we recognize them and not forget what they went through,” said Nate Flugel.
More than 100 students and volunteers participated in the event from 12 a.m. Friday to midnight.
