Detroit Lakes Fire Chief, Ryan Swanson has indicated the fire has now been contained.
The fire started in an upstairs apartment, several properties in the Washington Square Mall have heavy smoke damage, but the fire was contained to the apartment and its attic area.
The Fire Department asks that you avoid Washington Avenue from Frazee Street to Front Street as crews continue to work.
The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.

Fire crews have shut down Washington Avenue in Detroit Lakes from Highway 10 to Frazee Street as they battle a fire at the Washington Square Mall.
According to mall manager Dawn Livdahl, the fire began around 3:00 Friday afternoon in an apartment above Mattson’s Barber Shop. The fire then spread to Jack Chiver’s Realty and the Glik’s building as well.

There is expected to be significant smoke damage inside the mall. Mattson’s Barber Shop and adjoining business The Pink Buffalo and Glik’s appear to have taken a brunt of the damage as fire crews work to contain the blaze.
This is a developing story. Detroit Lakes Police Department, Detroit Lakes Fire Department, and Perham Fire Department have responded to the fire.
