Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)- The Detroit Lakes School Board had made alterations to the public comment period at school board meetings. The comment portion of the meeting originally had no limit on the number of people that could speak and each person was given five minutes.
That was changed, and a lot of community members were upset about the decisions. The new rules had a limit to 15 people being allowed to speak and each person was only given one minute. The public common portion was also moved to the end of the meeting agenda.
A lot of the disagreement comes from the school board’s attempt to adopt Policy #505, which is recognized as the ban on LGBTQ flag ban. This policy was not on the meeting agenda this past Monday, but the concerned citizens said they are worried some board members could take advantage of the public comment portion of the meeting being moved so they can include controversial items into meeting agendas without any headups beforehand.
