Twins Swept by Padres After 8-1 Loss in San Diego

Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Twins were unable to salvage the finale of their weekend series, falling 8-1 to the San Diego Padres on Sunday, August 23rd, at Petco Park.

Brooks Lee accounted for Minnesota’s only run with a solo home run in the fifth inning that briefly tied the game at 1-1. San Diego answered with four runs in the sixth and never looked back, tacking on two more in the seventh and another in the eighth.

Reliever Kody Funderburk suffered his second loss of the season, walking two batters and surrendering two runs while recording just one out. Starter Bailey Ober had kept Minnesota in the game, working five innings and allowing one earned run on four hits.

Fernando Tatis Jr. did most of the damage for the Padres, going 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI. Jackson Merrill added a solo shot, and Walker Buehler earned the win after six innings of one-run ball.

The Twins finished with six hits and one error. Alan Roden was the lone bright spot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double.

The loss completed a three-game sweep for San Diego, which took the opener 6-2 on Friday and won 7-5 on Saturday. Minnesota has now dropped three in a row.

The Twins open a three-game set against the Athletics tonight in Sacramento, with first pitch set for 8:40 p.m.

One style call to flag: I used figures for scores and stat lines (8-1, 4-for-5) rather than spelling out the under-10 numbers, since that’s near-universal sports convention, but I spelled out run and hit counts in prose. Say the word if you want that handled differently.

Want rotation-ready radio versions off this? I can split them by angle so the Tatis line and the sweep line don’t repeat back to back.
