Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Minnesota United needed a goal in the final minutes to avoid another loss Saturday night, settling for a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake at America First Field.
Joaquin Pereyra scored in the 89th minute to level the match. The play started with Loons goalkeeper Drake Callender, who launched a long ball beyond midfield that substitute Marcus Caldeira flicked on with a header from roughly 35 yards out. Pereyra ran onto it and chipped a first-touch finish past keeper Rafael Cabral. It was Callender’s first career goal contribution in MLS. Real Salt Lake had taken the lead in the 82nd minute on a goal from rookie Sergi Solans, his eighth of the season and his second in as many games.
Solans also missed two close-range chances, sending one wide in the 66th minute and hitting the post in the 86th. Callender finished with six saves. Cabral had one for Salt Lake.
The draw leaves Minnesota at 6-6-7 with 25 points, and winless in its last eight league matches. It was the second 1-1 draw between the clubs this season — the teams also tied by the same score May 23 in Minnesota.
The Loons return home Wednesday to host Atlanta United at Allianz Field.
