Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Timberwolves opened the Western Conference Semifinals with a 104-102 win over the San Antonio Spurs in Game One Monday night at Frost Bank Center.
The Spurs had a chance to steal the opener at the buzzer, but Julian Champagnie’s three-point attempt missed, sealing the road victory for Minnesota.
Julius Randle led the Wolves with 21 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Anthony Edwards added 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting in just 25 minutes in his return from a knee injury. Jaden McDaniels and Terrence Shannon Jr. each chipped in 16 points, and Mike Conley knocked down 4 of his 7 three-point attempts off the bench for 12 points. Naz Reid added 12 points and 9 rebounds, and Rudy Gobert pulled down 10 boards with 4 steals.
Minnesota outscored San Antonio 35-30 in the fourth quarter to erase a deficit and grab the road win. The Wolves shot 38.5% from beyond the arc and held a 58-52 edge on the glass.
San Antonio got a historic individual effort from Victor Wembanyama, who finished with a triple-double of 11 points, 15 rebounds and 12 blocks. Dylan Harper led the Spurs in scoring with 18 points, while Stephon Castle and Champagnie added 17 apiece. De’Aaron Fox struggled with his shot, finishing with 10 points on 5-of-14 shooting and 6 turnovers.
The Wolves lead the best-of-seven series 1-0. Game Two tips off Wednesday night in San Antonio.
