If you visit the Humane Society of the Lakes, you’ll find a well-maintained and recently updated animal shelter. Manager and Animal Coordinator Cora Fastner says she is always happy to give tours of the facility to show visitors the renovations, including the most recent update to the front dog room.
Fastner says remodeling began in 2023, and new fundraising efforts are now underway to develop another addition that will include a fenced area and outdoor dog runs.
The shelter is located on Highway 59 just north of Detroit Lakes. The Humane Society of the Lakes is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that relies heavily on community support. Its mission is to provide care for abandoned, stray, or unwanted animals, ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect. The organization was established in 1989 and opened at its current location in 2007. It is also a no-kill shelter.
Recently, the organization held its Annual Irish Fundraiser at the Detroit Lakes VFW. The event featured live music, a silent auction, games, raffles, and an Irish meal. The next fundraiser is planned for August and will be a Flash Tattoo Fundraiser featuring five tattoo artists, hosted by Woodfire Pizza in Detroit Lakes.
The Humane Society also offers a number of volunteer opportunities, including Canine Companions, Feline Friends, Book Buddies, Kennel Crew, and PetSmart Pals. Staff members are available to explain these programs, or you can learn more by visiting the Humane Society of the Lakes website.
Fastner says the work can be challenging, but the rewards make it worthwhile. “I have been working here for five years, and seeing the animal success stories is extremely rewarding. Animal rescue can be tough, but seeing the dogs and cats find forever homes makes it all worth it.”
While the dogs and cats wait to be adopted, the shelter encourages the community to consider adopting, volunteering, fostering, or donating.
