Phase three of the West Lake Drive improvement project in Detroit Lakes is set to begin this summer, and many residents are already noticing tree removal along the lake ahead of construction.

According to a notice from the City of Detroit Lakes, the work is necessary to prepare for a major upgrade that will include road and utility improvements, a new bike and walking trail, and enhanced beach and public spaces.

In total, 159 trees are in the project area, with 104 – about 65 percent – scheduled for removal. Many of the existing trees are overcrowded and in declining health. About 30 percent are expected to live three years or less, and 85 percent have a lifespan of less than ten years.

To replace them, 58 new trees will be planted, including some larger, more mature trees, along with a mix of species designed for long-term health. Additional shrubs and perennials will also be added.

The removal must be completed by March 31 to help protect the endangered northern long-eared bat. The city also says the wood will be reclaimed by a local organization for use in a future community project.

While there will be less shade in the short term, shade sails will be installed in seating areas while the new trees mature.

Although this site preparation may seem concerning, the overall goal is to create a more usable, sustainable, and attractive lakefront for the community.
