Free Tax Filing Services Available Through MAHUBE-OTWA

By Dave Bishop Mar 15, 2026 | 7:08 PM

You may be eligible to file your taxes for free online using MAHUBE-OTWA Community Action Partnership’s self-preparation tool.

If your adjusted gross income is $87,000 or less, you can use this IRS-supported service to file both your federal and state returns at no cost. Simply fill out a short survey to receive a unique link to create your account and get started.

The link and service will remain available through October 2026. After that, you can review, amend, or complete your return anytime using the username and password you created.

In addition, MAHUBE-OTWA offers the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program, which provides free, in-person help for low-income households, people with disabilities, and limited-English speakers. Staff and volunteers also help ensure clients receive any tax credits they may qualify for, including the Minnesota Child Tax Credit, renter’s property tax refunds, and homeowner property tax rebates, according to Lisa Stroshein, Senior Services Director.

Special consideration is given to those aged 60 and older. For in-person appointments, your adjusted gross income should be $67,000 or less. If your income is higher, the online self-preparation option is recommended.

This service is available to residents of Mahnomen, Becker, Otter Tail, Hubbard, and Wadena counties.

Helping people achieve self-sufficiency is at the heart of MAHUBE-OTWA, and offering free tax preparation is another way they support the community. For more information visit mahube.org or contact their Detroit Lakes office.
