Vikings Sign Kyler Murray to One-Year Deal, Setting Up QB Battle with JJ McCarthy

Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Vikings have added a veteran presence at quarterback, agreeing to terms with Kyler Murray on a one-year, league-minimum contract, the team announced Wednesday.

Murray, 28, spent the first seven seasons of his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals after being selected first overall in the 2019 draft.

The move signals Minnesota’s intent to create open competition at the game’s most important position. Murray is expected to push second-year signal-caller JJ McCarthy for the starting job when training camp opens this summer.

Murray appeared in five games last season, throwing for 962 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions.

The low-risk, high-upside nature of the deal reflects both Murray’s uncertain health history and the Vikings’ confidence in McCarthy as their long-term answer. By bringing in Murray at the minimum salary, Minnesota avoids any major financial commitment while giving itself a proven veteran option if McCarthy falters.

Murray, a two-time Pro Bowl selection and 2021 NFL Offensive Player of the Year during his time in Arizona, brings a dynamic dual-threat skill set that offensive coordinators have long coveted. At his best, he is capable of extending plays with his legs while delivering downfield with accuracy — a combination that could give the Vikings a new dimension on offense.

The Vikings have not yet made a formal announcement regarding the depth chart, but head coach Kevin O’Connell is expected to address the quarterback competition when the team opens the offseason program next month.
