Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Minnesota Wild fans have extra reason to celebrate as the NHL resumes play this week as three of their own are coming home as Olympic champions.
Matt Boldy, Brock Faber, and Quinn Hughes helped Team USA defeat Canada 2-1 in overtime in the gold medal game, giving the Americans their first Olympic hockey title in years and delivering a memorable moment for the Wild fanbase.
Boldy was front and center in the victory, tallying a goal in regulation to help keep the U.S. in the game. Hughes contributed an assist, while Faber provided the kind of steady defensive presence that has defined his young career. The overtime win over rival Canada made the gold that much sweeter.
The trio won’t have long to bask in the glory. The NHL resumes later this week, and Minnesota will head to Denver to face the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday in a marquee Central Division matchup. The stakes couldn’t be much higher — the Wild currently sit second in the division at 34-14, while the Avalanche lead the division with an impressive 37-9 record.
