Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Detroit Lakes girls hockey team saw its season come to an end Thursday night with a 9–2 loss to Crookston in the Section 8A quarterfinals.
The Lakers got off to a promising start when Izzy Mariotti found the back of the net in the opening three minutes of the first period. But Crookston responded with overwhelming offensive pressure, rattling off five consecutive goals before the first intermission to take control of the game.
Detroit Lakes showed signs of life in the second period when Presley Nelson connected on a long-distance shot. However, any momentum was short-lived as the Pirates answered just seven seconds later.
Crookston’s offensive surge continued throughout the night, with eighth-grader Christina Hershey proving particularly difficult to contain. Hershey recorded a hat trick on the power play.
The loss marks the end of the road for Detroit Lakes, which will bid farewell to two graduating seniors: Hadley Songstad and Brynn Erickson.
Crookston advances to the Section 8A semifinals, where they will face top-seeded Warroad on Saturday.
