Empowering Adult Learners

By Dave Bishop Jan 18, 2026 | 6:37 PM

Adults in the Lakes Area looking to build new skills have a variety of free educational opportunities through Lakes Area Adult Education. According to Program Manager Jennifer Hellekson, the programs prepare students for post-high school education, exam preparation, and employment opportunities, while creating equitable access for all learners.

Those working toward a GED or Adult Diploma can improve their reading, writing, and math skills, starting with assessments that set personal goals and create a plan to achieve them. Hellekson says teachers provide guidance and resources, helping students transition successfully after earning a GED or diploma.

The program also offers preparation for the Minnesota Driver’s License Exam, Nursing Entry Exam, and Food Handler Certificate. Participants receive support with career planning, including job research, resume building, and interview skills, as well as college preparation, post-secondary entrance exams, and financial aid applications.

Distance learning options are also available and allow students to study online at their own pace.

English as a Second Language learners can take classes in speaking, listening, reading, writing, pronunciation, and grammar, with citizenship preparation also available.

Lakes Area Adult Education is available at nine different locations. Learn more online or by calling 218-844-5760.
