Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Basketball Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett is returning to the Minnesota Timberwolves organization in a multifaceted ambassador role, marking the end of a lengthy estrangement from the franchise where he spent the majority of his legendary career.
Garnett will take on an all-encompassing position with both the Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx, focusing on business development, community initiatives, and content creation. The reunion comes after years of distance between the 15-time All-Star and the organization following his retirement in 2016.
The relationship between Garnett and the Wolves had been strained due to a falling out with former owner Glen Taylor. However, the arrival of new ownership has paved the way for reconciliation. Garnett has reportedly developed a strong working relationship with current owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, the former New York Yankees star.
As part of the renewed partnership, the Timberwolves have announced plans to retire Garnett’s number 21 jersey in a future ceremony, a long-awaited honor for the player who transformed the franchise during his tenure.
Garnett spent 14 of his 21 NBA seasons with Minnesota, leading the team to eight consecutive playoff appearances and the 2004 Western Conference Finals. He earned the 2004 NBA MVP award as a Timberwolf before winning an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008.
The details and timeline for the jersey retirement ceremony will be announced at a later date.
